A few years ago, in 2010, an 1980s Volkswagen Scirocco was converted to run on coffee beans. They did it for the recording of the British television program Bang Goes the Theory.
The car, called the Car-Puccino, was equipped with a vat filled with ground coffee, making the car look like the DeLorean DMC-12 from the Back to the Future trilogy. The coffee was heated to a very high temperature and then cooled, releasing hydrogen gas. That, in turn, was fed into the engine instead of conventional gasoline.
This car even covered the distance from London to Manchester – some 200 miles, while using 70kg of coffee – that’s 20kg of coffee per 100km. Therefore, it was necessary to refuel after 50-70 kilometers. In addition, the car broke down several times and the journey lasted 10 hours.
