The first test of the cheapest Grants: impressive!

How does it look

The simplified Lada Granta in the Classic package looks more attractive than the previous cheap versions – it has mirrors, door handles and door moldings in body color. Against this background, the absence of airbags, ABS and the ERA-GLONASS system, an immobilizer is almost imperceptible. There is no air conditioning or heated seats.

But the electric power steering, electric front windows, central locking – all this remains. The price is more than 80 thousand rubles lower than for the 2021 Classic. And if you trade in your car or use a loan from Lada Finance – for all 100 thousand.

How it rides?

There are three body types: sedan, liftback and station wagon. They all have a new 90hp 11182 engine and a five-speed mechanical transmission. But the engine has new “brains” with a deeper use of the Russian element base, and the second environmental class is declared instead of the fifth. According to factory specifications, fuel consumption should not increase, but life will tell.

The anti-crisis Grant is going well. As much as can be said about a car dating back to the 80s. The engine pulls great “from below”, the shifting clarity is almost foreign made. The suspension is a little stiff, but there’s also the added benefit of optional 15-inch wheels. For Russian roads – good.

The new handlebar is made in Chelyabinsk. To the touch it is rougher than before. There is no “music”, but there is an audio preparation – 4 speakers and an antenna.

How does it slow down?

Instead of ABS production Bosch now has a mechanical brake force regulator on the rear axle – everything is the same as on the VAZ-2108. I remember it didn’t always work clearly, giving the right and left wheels different pressures. Let’s see if the quality has improved. In any case, braking techniques that are about to block will have to remember drivers.

The departure of ABS caused very large-scale changes – I had to add studs for the “wizard” to the body, replace the brake lines and replace the vacuum brake booster. So a lot of work has been done.

And the new steering wheel without cushion is also exactly new, and not “from Kalina” or “from Priora”. It has an original bendable edge – to fit UN passive safety regulations.

The first test of the cheapest Grants: impressive! In the absence of ABS, a mechanical brake force regulator should reduce the chance of rear wheel locking – it takes into account the load on the rear axle and doses the pressure to the rear drum brakes.

For domestic consumption

Perhaps the most frustrating change is the immobilizer lockout (chip shortage). Apart from locks, nothing else protects the car against theft: the owners will have to fence something themselves. The instrument panel looks like it used to, but it doesn’t have a shift indicator (we’ll live with it). And it is not interchangeable with the old one – the speed signal is now taken from the gearbox and not from the wheel sensors.

And with such a Grant it will be difficult to travel abroad – after all, it does not meet some international requirements. Obviously, there will most likely be no problems with the EAEU countries, but somewhere beyond…

However, it is not clear how to check this – according to the mark in the EPTS? Or are buyers allowed to sign a voluntary refusal to travel abroad, analogous to a voluntary agreement to install the ERA-GLONASS system some time later?

We can do it even cheaper

So far, everything is not so scary – and for 658,300 rubles (with a trade-in or a loan) they take Grant Classic. If only because nothing new is cheaper than a million and never will be.

But it can be even cheaper! At least by analogy with the completely “ragged” version of the Standard that has left the price lists. The price is quite realistic to reduce to 600-620 thousand rubles. Or is it still not possible without power steering and electric windows?
