Double-decker carriages appear in the metro

The Moscow Ministry of Transport is discussing with Russian Railways the launch of double-decker trains on Moscow’s central ring road, where passenger traffic already exceeds 550,000 people per day, which is already close to the limit. Double-decker trains will increase the ring’s carrying capacity by adding more seats and thereby increasing passenger comfort.

The new type of trains includes bike racks, electric scooter chargers, USB and TYPE-C ports for gadget charging, wireless charging, toilets with commodes, special places for passengers with disabilities, touchscreens and much more.

The new trains will also have wide doors, which speed up passenger boarding and alighting, and the number will be increased to three per carriage.

Maxim Liksutov, Head of the Department of Transport and Development of the Road Transport Infrastructure of the City of Moscow:

— On behalf of the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, we are working with our colleagues from the Russian Railways on special technical requirements for new rolling stock. It will be 100% product and development of domestic manufacturers. The creation of an electric double-decker train will strengthen the economy of the country: it will bring new orders to manufacturers, encourage economic operators to organize additional production, create jobs, the need to acquire new competences and improve the quality of equipment, thus enabling a favorable environment for import substitution, developing industrial potential and supporting the economy during the impact of the sanctions. And of course it will increase the comfort of our passengers – this is our main task.
