Below we summarize the results of the expert contest from the March issue of “Behind the wheel” magazine.
In the next task, we asked how the hero could heat the windshield wipers of the second-generation Nissan X-Trail crossover (T31), which park low and freeze in winter. There is no heated windshield or at least brush parking. There are no such glasses among the non-original ones. And the change was supposed to make it easy to get back to normal.
Some readers have suggested using plastic tubing to get warm air out of the deflectors. Others have suggested installing a plastic plate to direct the airflow underneath. But the glass area where the wipers stop is under the instrument panel, and the shape of the engine screen that separates the passenger compartment and engine compartment doesn’t allow air to get there. And not everyone will like the view of the salon with pipes or plates.
The task said that many people faced the problem and solved it in a rather complicated way. Slightly cut and welded.
To understand how to recreate the wiper drive, we will first find out how it works, and the winner of the competition will help us in this.

The wiper is a structure consisting of several swing arms and a crank mechanism. The crank is mounted on the output shaft of the gearmotor and rotates. It sets in motion the thrust that acts on the lever connecting the driver’s wiper line. In the same place is a thrust hinge that guides the passenger brush handle.
The lengths of the levers on the driver’s and passenger’s side have been chosen in such a way that both sectors of glass cleaning are optimal from the point of view of the designers (apparently from a country with a rather warm climate). That of the driver reaches the body style in the top position a bit, and the passenger seat in the top position blocks the driver’s wiper sector.
What can be done to make the wipers park higher? For example, reduce their labor sector slightly. You can shorten the crank on the gearbox or increase the length of the driver’s and passenger’s wiper arms. But for this you really have to cut and cook!
There is a much easier way to park the wipers higher. It is necessary to “drop” them to the lower position and freeze higher, where the warm air reaches the glass. How do you do that? Consider the design of the windshield wiper gearbox.
One of the regular readers suggested an interesting solution with an adapter to be purchased. But changing the parking height of the wiper is not enough for proper heating.
On the driven gear there is a cam, which during the operation of the wipers closes and opens the contacts in the wiper stop zone. Keyways are made on the output shaft of the gearbox, which ensure that the crank cannot scroll during operation. The crank is attached to the output shaft with a nut. And then there is the option to adjust.
By loosening the nut it is necessary to turn the crank some keyways in the direction of movement relative to the shaft. Then the extreme upper position of the wipers will not change, and when they go down, the wipers will pass the lowest position set by the factory and stop higher and fall under the flow of warm air from the heater.
And in the summer, everything easily returns to its original state.
