What cars do traffic violators drive in Russia?

Avto.ru experts, especially for socialbites.ca, analyzed data from ProAvto reports and found which cars received the most penalties. The study was carried out as part of the Big Traffic Rules Examination, a project of Avto.ru dedicated to road safety.

It was revealed that the drivers of Ford Focus, Kia Rio and Hyundai Solaris, who committed the most traffic violations in Russia, received fines of 14.8 thousand, 11.8 thousand and 11.6 thousand, respectively, last year.

Skoda Octavia, Toyota Camry, BMW 5 Series, 3 Series and X5, as well as Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volkswagen Polo were among the ten most penalized models.

Who drives faster

At the same time, BMW 5 Series owners collected the largest fines for traffic violations throughout the year. For 9,000 cars of this model that appeared on the radar of the traffic police in 2021, there are 110,000 fines in the amount of about 80 million rubles – an average of 12 fines per car.

In the same period, Mercedes-Benz E-Class drivers were fined 62.6 million rubles (11 fines per vehicle), 57 million rubles (9 fines on average) for Toyota Camry. Ford Focus drivers received an average of 6 fines per vehicle during the same period.

At the same time, the most common violation, with fines for cars covered by the study,

From 20 to 40 km / h – about 3 million such facts were recorded.

The second most common violation (non-compliance with the requirements of signs and markings) brought drivers less fines – more than 320 thousand rubles.

Drivers are subject to minimal fines for not giving way at an intersection, driving without license plates (or misplaced signs), not prioritizing vehicles with special signals or service vehicles, and violating human transport rules. , the classification report says.

The presence of several BMW models in the list of cars with the highest concentration of penalties can be explained by the good driving characteristics of these cars, provoke an active driving style and at the same time

they are chosen by people of a certain temperament,

Vesti FM radio points out columnist Igor Morzharetto.

“As a rule, BMW cars are chosen by wealthy people who like to drive fast. In an interview with socialbites.ca, Morzharetto argues that those who calmly drive, even with money, are likely to prefer another brand. “The result is a kind of mutual influence where the characteristics of the car cause the driver to step on the gas.”

The large number of Ford Focus, Kia Rio and Hyundai Solaris cars that have been penalized can be explained by the active work of these models, as well as a significant percentage of these models in the Russian car fleet, Anton Shaparin, vice president of the National Automobile Association, believes.

“Such mass-produced cars are very popular, including in commercial operations,” Shaparin tells socialbites.ca. “The mileage of the taxis is very high, and the more the car is used, the more likely it is to be fined.”

Ford Focus is used by entrepreneurs whose activities are associated with frequent travel, but there is a geographical factor in the distribution of fines.

“For example, the same Toyota Camry is common in the Caucasus, where the driving style is more aggressive than in the whole country. In addition, the distribution of traffic cameras should be taken into account: if the density of their installation in the regions was the same as in Moscow, then the Lada brand would have dominated such a rating, ”says Shaparin .

As socialbites.ca found out, the largest amounts of traffic tickets in Russia are collected by German premium drivers, and owners of budget foreign cars most often violate traffic rules. Experts state that the temperament of the drivers affects the choice of vehicle, the number of traffic fines is also reflected in the number of cameras on the roads and the intensity of vehicle use.
