Crisis, shortages, rising prices … – the car must be protected!
How to extend the life of the most expensive part, namely the body, is told by experts from Za Rulem, the oldest and most popular automotive publication in Russia.
1. Which machines are least sensitive to corrosion?
The anti-corrosion properties of cars are clearly influenced by their status.
- The bodies most resistant to corrosion are Volvo, Audi, BMW, Mercedes and also Skoda from recent years.
- The most unstable are UAZ, as well as Uz-Daewoo and some of the middle-aged “Chinese”: the current ones noticeably began to catch up.
- All other cars are in the middle.
The resistance of bodies is increased, both by galvanization and modern paint materials and by the thoughtfulness of their design. Sometimes durability is enhanced by the quality of the steel used: Toyota is an example.
2. When should I start processing the machine?
Anyone who expects not to be able to drive a car for more than two or three years cannot do anything at all. But today the situation is such that the price tags are jumping and the market is empty. It is not known when you will buy the next car. Therefore, it makes sense to take care of the most expensive part: the body.
You can do this regardless of the age of the car and the time of year. As for the manufacturer’s warranty against corrosion, don’t flatter yourself: in practice it is difficult to make a claim to the manufacturer, and regular visits to the dealer “for checking” are usually a condition of the warranty.
3. What are anticorrosive agents?
If we talk about technology, then all types of anti-corrosion treatments of car bodies can be divided into two groups, conditionally called Canadian and European.
In the first case, the hidden cavities of the car are filled with so-called ML connections*, they also cover the bottom and the arches of the car. These penetrating compositions not only isolate the protected surface from oxygen, but also serve as a means of delivering corrosion inhibitors to the treated areas, which inhibit the undesired process.
*WHAT IS ML METHOD?
Swedish chemist Sven Lurin, who worked at Motormanneus Riksforbound, suggested injecting highly liquid oil-wax-based compounds into hidden cavities. If the cavities are closed, it is necessary to drill technological holes in the body.
The purpose of processing hidden cavities is to cover them with a composition that displaces air and moisture from the metal surface and slows down corrosion processes. The method was successful and was given the name Motormanneus Lurin, ML for short.
In the European version, the underside of the car and the wheel arches are additionally covered with bituminous compounds.
4. Which method is better?
In the Canadian version, everything happens quickly and cheaply – roughly in an hour and 15-25 thousand rubles. Preparation is almost not necessary – even the soil is not washed very carefully.
ML compounds work almost perfectly, impregnating welds and folding. At the same time, the effect is easy to master, because the compositions are translucent. There is also a drawback – such coatings are quickly erased and washed off under the influence of oncoming air pressure, gravel impacts, and so on. Therefore, the actual life span is about a year, after which the treatment must be repeated.
The European processing option is expensive and time consuming. It takes several hours to a day and sometimes costs the customer ten times more. Surfaces are thoroughly washed and dried – otherwise the coating may peel off. At the same time, the actual condition of the surface is not visible through the bituminous mastic. But at the exit we have strong mechanical protection, which is enough for 5-7 years.
5. Do I need to drill holes?
The main point is to bring the compositions to all hidden corners of the body. The easiest way to do this is to drill additional holes and then plug them in with plugs. Abroad, holes are drilled without the customer’s request. About the same was once done in the USSR.
Now our craftsmen take full advantage of the easy access to the cavity drainage and various technological holes. Admittedly, this isn’t always possible – how do you get into a multi-section threshold, for example? In this case, as a rule, the customer is asked – do you mind drilling? In any case, modern cars require special care: briefly disfigure a wiring harness with a drill.
6. Is the dealer’s anti-corrosion agent good?
Often such work is carried out formally. Sometimes anticorrosive is served together with other “dopas”. In short, car processing is presented as a threefold “gift” to the customer. In particular, the so-called liquid wheel arch coverings based on rubber bitumen mastic, in addition to the anti-corrosion agent itself, promise mechanical protection and improved sound insulation.
In good workshops engaged in anti-corrosion treatment, the exhaust system should be protected from the ingress of drugs. Also, nothing should get on the braking mechanisms.
7. Which drugs are preferred?
The situation with anti-corrosion agents is about the same as in the motor oil market: there are major players of the same class and there are all the rest. You only need to focus on the most important: everything else is a lottery. Usually win-win.
The main brands are Noxudol (aka Mercasol), Dinitrol, Waxoyl, Tectyl (we almost never use it), Prim (household, not bad), as well as the “Canadian” Rust Stop (there is no such brand in Canada – the was invented for Europe).
8. What do the car manufacturers say?
Manufacturers have different views on additional anticorrosive agents. Let’s say a Jaguar Land Rover dealer told us that refinishing is not necessary, but if the customer so desires, dealers can provide this service. Mitsubishi says anti-corrosion will be useful for a car of any age. Volvo told us they don’t need extra corrosion protection for their cars, but keeping the car clean will reduce the risk of corrosion.
BEE Renault intimidated. They say that a factory treatment is sufficient, although the customer can apply additional coatings if the car is not affected and the method of application. Otherwise, this is a reason to refuse the warranty.
And here are the cars VAZ it makes sense to process annually! We quote the manual of the Lada Vesta:
“To increase the body’s corrosion resistance, a special anti-corrosion compound has been applied to the closed box-shaped cavities of the sills, spars, cross-members and other elements of the body’s base. During the use of the car, it is necessary to treat the body against corrosion during the first year of use and periodically once a year at dealers according to the technology developed by the manufacturer.
9. Self or in ministry?
At the service they will do better – “the hand is full”, and the equipment is more perfect. However, not everyone is ready to draft a five-figure sum. If there is time, desire and circumstances, the simplest anti-corrosion treatment of your car can be carried out independently. The optimal preparations for such work are mentioned above – they are worth the money.
But even primitive processing the old-fashioned way is better than no processing at all. Today it is somehow inconvenient to recommend pouring used oil into the boxes – it is better to take spindle oil for hydraulics. There are no corrosion inhibitors in it, but it has excellent fluidity and can penetrate everywhere.
It is, of course, still better to use modern anti-corrosion materials: after all, the 21st century is in the garden!
