I go less often – I pay more for gas! The paradox is explained by the expert

What is not used – dies

If we drive every day (and we also do a lot of miles), the chances of the brakes rusting are much smaller. Constant use of brakes prevents parts from losing mobility due to corrosion. Indeed, with each braking, the pads and brake discs are “polished”, as it were, and the moving elements of the braking mechanisms are developed.

And vice versa: the less often the car is driven, the greater the chance that the brake pads, under the influence of moisture and dirt, will rust at the contact points with the conductor and lose their freedom of movement.

What threatens rusty plaque?

Rust is hard and has a much greater volume than the metal from which it is formed. The rust “swollen” pads are increasingly clamped in a rusty conductor (the surface is also susceptible to corrosion). The brake cylinder still has enough force to compress the brake pads and slow down. But due to rust, the pads can not go back to an insignificant, but very important value. It turns out that they are constantly pressed against the disk. Therefore, they wear out quickly, deteriorate dynamics and increase fuel consumption.

In addition, most machines have molded stainless steel anti-cracking elements between the block and the guide. They themselves do not rust, but contribute to the accumulation of moisture in a narrow gap, accelerating the corrosion process.

Tip 1: Clean your pads

Many believe that the rust will disappear, it is worth returning to active driving. This is possible – in the event that it has just begun to appear. With severe corrosion, the problem will not go away on its own.

These surfaces of steel parts corrode intensively.

Three of my cars improved rolling after cleaning the rust on the brake pads and guides. They even started rolling down a slight slope, which was not the case before.

In addition, the guides must be lubricated after cleaning. True, fat in salty slurry on the roads will not linger for a long time.

Tip 2. File the protruding pad elements

About 0.5mm. Then no corrosion can deprive the cushion of mobility. The block “plays” a little in the conductor, freeing itself from rust. Strange vibrations, whistling or squeaking “released” pads don’t transmit – controlled.

“Snowdrops” – special attention

Many owners believe that it is possible to extend the life of the car if you do not use it often. In fact, simple wear and tear will not save. A car that is little driven sometimes demands more attention than one that is actively exploited.
