Highway M-12 Moscow-Kazan: rate 8 rubles per kilometer

Two years and done!

This is the first toll road to be built in one go. And this is 800 km!

The rest of the roads have been constructed and commissioned in separate sections and are not yet completely finished. The Moscow-Kazan highway should break this unfriendly tradition.

In addition, they plan to build it in an extremely short time: the timepiece will open in 2024.

We depart from Moscow

Initially they wanted to build the track from the Central Ring Road. But for anyone traveling through the Moscow region, the M-12 would be useless, because the worst traffic jams occur on the stretch from the Moscow ring road to the central ring road: Balashikha, Noginsk … And they decided to review the project.

And it’s great! Most importantly, the rates are not exorbitant. For example: for cars 43 km from the main M-11 from Moscow to Solnechnogorsk cost from 650 to 820 rubles. Robbery!

The first to be commissioned is a 13-kilometer segment in the Moscow region. It already has a “rough” layer of asphalt. On the rest of the M-12, so far, as in the photo on the left.

But let’s look at things realistically. Such a sought-after segment will certainly not be completely cheap. Even today it would be naive to count on less than 500 rubles. And in 2024 there will be even more.

Strange route

M-12 runs parallel to the existing Gorky highway (M-7 highway) to Vladimir. The new route continues south to Murom, Arzamas and Kanash. From the highway to the major cities of Nizhny Novgorod and Cheboksary you have to drive an hour and a half. Uncomfortable! However, this decision has two justifications.

  • First, they wanted to partially make the M-12 an alternative to the M-5 Ural highway. It’s far from it, but it will really be more convenient, for example, to get to some parts of the Ryazan region or Mordovia via the M-12.
  • Secondly, many plots have to be purchased for the new road. Somewhere it is difficult, somewhere it is unreasonably expensive, somewhere it is simply impossible. So they chose the path of least resistance.

  • Third, the highway will give development to the regions it runs through. According to calculations, it will be served by about 5,000 people. M-7 Volga will not be left without cars and will keep the entire infrastructure with jobs.

Can you go already?

Its construction takes hundreds of kilometers, and technological roads have been built almost along its entire length. It turns out that it is already possible to drive along the future route today.

Not everywhere in a straight line: rivers, railways and, for example, the Central Ring will have to be crossed with hooks, along existing bridges and crossings. But in general, the whole cleanup is already done.

You can even take a virtual tour. Almost all of the future M-12 is plotted on Yandex.Maps (even with nodes!).

Interesting numbers

80,000 people are involved in the construction. There will be more than 60 eco-transitions for animals. Of the nearly 300 bridges and viaducts, we pick two: the only cable-stayed bridge on the route over the Oka at Murom and the crossing over the Volga at Kazan. Its length will be more than 3 km, it provides two navigable spans of more than 150 m each.

The thickness of the sand cushion of the road is 2-2.5 m on flat ground and up to 10 m for artificial structures. According to traditional technologies, the pillow should “rest” for almost a year before the next stage of work. And according to the modern – just a few weeks, and you can continue to build.

Asphalt is laid in three layers. In addition, the top one is specially designed for particularly high-speed and high-traffic circuits.

Build a job, plant a tree

Avtodor and his contractors must plant three new trees to replace the felled ones. Where exactly – indicate the responsible departments. Not necessarily this place in the immediate vicinity of the runway, but the amount of disembarkation must be taken into account.

Broken local roads, which suffer from a large number of passing trucks, will not be repaired on a similar schedule. Residents will have to wait for scheduled repairs.

And where to refuel?

Since the intention is to enter 800 km in one go, a reasonable demand arises at gas stations. You can somehow live off other payers. M-4 “Don” was created on the basis of the old road, and all the necessary infrastructure was already there. On the M-11, the Neva is saved by a detour from Tver along the old M-10 Rossiya highway.

The Central Ring Road is not that long. You can skip it without stopping entirely at the gas station, refuel on radial roads before or after the exit, or on the free section of the Leningradskoe to Kievskoe highway.

And from the M-12 you have to move to Murom? They don’t have to: they promise to launch several multifunctional complexes right away. Later they will be built every 50-80 km. And they even promise charging points for electric vehicles!

Most importantly, gas stations really work on time. Otherwise, for the service of emergency commissioners, it is necessary to buy not pick-ups and minibuses, but fuel trucks.

How much is it?

Initially, the construction was estimated at 623 billion rubles. In December last year, the estimate was increased by 200 billion, which explains the rise in the metal price and the need to raise wages. And now, when the dollar and the euro are up 50%, it’s scary to think how much the value will rise.

Moreover, because of the sanctions with purchases, we will have to come up with something: find new suppliers, build new logistics schedules. And all this entails additional costs.

The rate is not even approximate. But everything revolves around the fact that the proposal from the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management to increase the rates is accepted. The department proposes to introduce a fee of 8 rubles per kilometer for the tracks under construction. This means that you will have to pay 6,400 rubles for the trip from Moscow to Kazan. Duration!

However, this is just a suggestion. And how much it will actually be – we’ll find out soon.
