Every driver must have wondered: what happens if you engage the park position of a car with an automatic transmission during a journey or, even worse, accidentally step the selector lever into the R (reverse) position.
Modern automatic transmissions have extensive security, which is based on software blockers. They are electronically controlled and protected against misuse. Even if one of the drivers changes gears and puts the selector lever in position R, nothing dangerous happens: the electronics simply do not allow reverse gear to be activated.
But if you turn on the “park” mode (P) while driving, you can break the box.
There is no electronics, the box is fixed in this mode using a mechanical drive. Therefore, if you engage P mode at high speed, a creak is heard, indicating that the bolt is still trying to grab the shaft. The metal will crumble, heat up until the hook falls off.
By the way, on some machines the locks are so strong that they lock the axle and cause the wheels to lock. The car skids to a complete stop.
