In a recent release, Kalashnikov Concern demonstrated tests of a dynamic protection system labeled 4S24. This system is designed to shield BMP-3 armored vehicles. The demonstration focused on evaluating how the protection performs under realistic battlefield conditions and its potential impact on survivability and crew safety.
Tests were conducted at a distance of 30 meters, using an RPG-7 with a cumulative projectile PG-7VS. This type of warhead is designed to defeat armor through a high-energy jet. The chosen setup aimed to simulate a close-range assault scenario to assess the 4S24 system under stress, reflecting the kind of threats infantry fighting vehicles may encounter in modern conflict zones.
During the test, the armor plate equipped with the 4S24 block remained intact and resistant to penetration. The protective system effectively reflected the cumulative jet, while the steel plate beneath showed only minor local deformation, piercing no more than about half an inch in depth. These results indicate a notable improvement in how the 4S24 handles heavy anti-armor strikes compared with traditional protections, contributing to the overall integrity of the hull under attack and preserving key structural elements of the vehicle.
The 4S24 dynamic protection is relatively light in mass, a consequence of its design philosophy that reduces the amount of energetic material while maintaining effectiveness. The protection units themselves are slim and compact, contributing to a lower overall load on the vehicle. Across measured parameters, 4S24 demonstrated significant performance gains over previous generation protections, offering enhanced interruption of penetrating jets and better energy dissipation. In addition, the lighter profile helps minimize adverse effects on mobility, payload capacity, and other critical characteristics of the BMP-3 family.
