A 32-year-old man who drove a Mercedes-Benz into a group of pedestrians in central Moscow has had a preventive measure imposed. The information was released by the Moscow Prosecutor’s Office on its Telegram channel, outlining the latest court actions in the case.
According to the Central Administrative District prosecutor, the Tagansky District Court ordered house arrest for the driver after the incident on Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street. This action was announced in a statement from the district prosecutor’s office, which detailed the initial steps taken by investigators and the judiciary in response to the accident.
The affected individuals include two girls aged 12 and 14, born in 2011 and 2013, who were among those injured as the vehicle struck pedestrians on the sidewalk. During the scene of the crash, the driver declined to undergo a medical examination, allegedly due to intoxication. He has been charged under paragraph a of part 2 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Under the current provisions, the offense carries potential penalties including forced labor for up to five years or imprisonment ranging from three to seven years.
The collision occurred late at night near the building previously associated with the TASS news agency, when the driver reportedly lost control and veered into a crowd that had gathered on the sidewalk. One victim required extraction from beneath the vehicle, underscoring the severity of the impact and the urgency of emergency response efforts. Officials stressed that the incident is under comprehensive investigation and that prosecutors are coordinating with law enforcement to determine all contributing factors and safety measures relevant to the location and times of the event.
