Construction of the first factory in Russia for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles has started in the Kaliningrad region. It will be built next to the construction site of the Baltic nuclear power plant. From 2025, the company will supply batteries for up to 50,000 electric vehicles per year, TASS reports.
The total area of the factory is 23.6 hectares, the area of production buildings is 135 thousand square meters. m. About 1.5 thousand jobs will be created here.
The annual design capacity of the enterprise is 4 GW, with an increase in product demand, it is possible to increase the production capacity to 14 GW. The plant will also supply power grid facilities and industrial enterprises with energy storage devices.
The operator of the project is the company Renera (part of Rosatom’s fuel company TVEL). They note that the change in market and geopolitical conditions has affected the acceleration of the development of the energy storage system industry in the Russian market.
Experts predict a strong growth in demand for batteries for electric vehicles by 2030. It is assumed that by 2030 Russia will produce about 220 thousand electric cars.
