Factory recommendations regarding viscosity should not be neglected. If only one option is indicated in the manual, then it is better not to argue. Especially if the car is still under warranty.
The manufacturer actually says that it has not conducted any tests with oils of a different viscosity and therefore cannot guarantee that the engine will work properly for the whole raw material. For example, AVTOVAZ advises to use oils with a working viscosity of 30 at air temperatures not higher than 25˚С, and in the heat of more than 45˚С switch to 20W-50.
But there are other features of machine operation to keep in mind when considering the seasonality of engine oil changes.
The viscosity of the oil, which according to SAE directly affects the operating temperature range, is indicated by two numbers and the letter W. For example, 0W-20. The first digit identifies the low temperature properties of the oil, which are responsible for engine starting, the second digit defines the range of changes in viscosity at engine operating temperatures.
Engine oil needs to be changed…
1. Like long runs
For those who drive little (less than 10 thousand a year), seasonal engine oil changes are a waste of money. Fill with a wide range oil (eg 5W-40) – and drive smoothly. But if the annual trips are tens of thousands of miles, it is reasonable to top up with thicker oil for the warm season.
2. If you live in a cold region
The region where you live also plays a role. Residents of the southern regions do not really need “zero”: they can drive all year round, for example, on 10W-40. But if there is a strong continental climate, then seasonal replacement makes sense. In addition, the viscosity should be chosen depending on the maximum annual average temperatures in your region.
3. When you go south
Car travelers may also have reasons to change oil seasonally. Having outlined a solid mileage with a hefty load in warm weather to warm seas and along mountain roads, it makes sense to take special care of the engine. The official representatives of Hyundai and Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda and Subaru, Renault and Volvo, Mitsubishi and Kia said that the oils poured into our cars are suitable for all weather conditions. In general, change according to the instructions – by mileage: for Subaru – every 15 thousand km, for Volvo – every 20 thousand km, etc.
If the operating conditions are difficult, you can switch more often. But binding to the time of year and temperature is in any case not mandatory.
AVTOVAZ gave a more streamlined answer: refer to the instruction manual and, from the table, determine the quality level and viscosity class of the oil prescribed for your car in accordance with the existing operating temperature range.
If necessary, change the oil according to the table, which indicates the temperature ranges to which the oil viscosity class corresponds: from -40 to +25˚С, from -30 to +25˚С, and so on.
The applicability of oils is therefore not due to seasonal influences, but to the region in which the car is used, taking into account the prevailing temperatures. An oil change is recommended every 10 or 15 thousand kilometers (depending on the model) or once a year.
In other words, we are not looking at the calendar, but at the thermometer. Well, that seems like a more realistic answer to me.

When changing engine oil, do not use products with a lower quality class than recommended by the car manufacturer. But you can “play” with viscosity and wellzhno.
