Turbocharging in an engine does not always mean an insignificant resource and frequent repairs. Some engines, with proper maintenance and the use of good fuel, prove to be quite reliable. Alexander Vinogradov immediately found several proofs of this. In addition, all the engines he considered are installed on four-wheel drive crossovers, which means that they work with increased loads some of the time.
One of the most striking examples is the B5254T2 engine (after modernization – B5254T9), which was installed on a very large Volvo XC90, which is no stranger to a country road and even off-road.
It is this engine, which belongs to the Modular series, which has led the family tree since the 1990s, which has become the most reliable in the XC90 line of units – and the most popular. An apparently suspicious combination: five cylinders and a turbine are in practice both in terms of power and reliability.
There are problems, but you can count them on your fingers:
- periodically there may be problems with phase shifters;
- seals often leak, especially in cars with a mileage of more than 150 thousand km;
- the timing belt should be replaced every 120 thousand km, but it is better to shorten the interval to 100 thousand;
- T5 is very sensitive to overheating – you need to regularly clean the radiators.
The first generation Volvo XC90, with its five-cylinder turbo petrol engine, remains reliable even in old age. Now on the secondary market there are quite worthy copies with runs of more than 350 thousand – this is saying something! .. But it is better to avoid versions with a more powerful T6 turbo engine.
And what else to look at this topic, if Volvo has no soul? Consider all options for reliable turbo crossovers!
