The traffic police inspector wrote out a protocol for my turning left into the cafe parking lot. He says he violated the “Move straight ahead” sign. The fine is 1500 rubles. The problem is that the sign is not in front of the parking lot, but almost 100 meters in front of it, and this is indicated in the protocol at my request. It was not possible to convince the employees during the analysis. Suggest going to court. Is it correct or is it easier to pay?

The head of the Main Directorate for Road Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Police Lieutenant General Mikhail Chernikov, answers questions from readers.

National standard GOST R 52289–2019 “Technical means of organizing traffic. Rules for the use of road signs, markings, traffic lights, roadblocks and conductors” allows the use of the 4.1.1 “Straight ahead” sign to duplicate the 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3 markings, separating oncoming traffic flows. To do this, it is installed immediately at the beginning of the road section. The action of the sign in this case extends to the nearest intersection.According to Annex 1 of the Traffic Rules of the Russian Federation, such a sign does not prohibit turning right in courtyards and other areas next to the road.

By turning left in the area of the sign 4.1.1, you have committed an administrative violation, for which the responsibility is established in part 2 of Article 12.16 of the Code of Administrative Violations of the Russian Federation (turning left or a U-turn contrary to the requirements prescribed by road signs or road markings) in the form of an administrative fine from 1000 to 1500 rubles.
