Automotive designer Sergei Kurdyuk, who previously held senior engineering positions at AvtoVAZ and UAZ, told in his recent interview what, in his opinion, the Russian auto industry is waiting for if the situation develops as it is now. Kurdyuk believes that the investment policy in Russia is not conducive to the development of the auto industry.
Lacking a managed localization policy at the government/state level or special newly established institutions that conduct sensible policies with appropriate investments, the auto industry is refocusing on components from Asia – China, India, Iran. This will most likely lead to slow degradation of the manufactured equipment. Over time, it will either be replaced by imported products – the same Chinese, for example – or, in the case of limited supply from outside, by stable, low-level products that compete weakly with imported products,” the Volga News information portal quotes Sergei Kurdyuk .
In the early 2010s, Sergey Kurdyuk worked as the chief designer of AVTOVAZ, later he headed the STC of UAZ. Now he is responsible for the laboratory of digital development processes “Laduga”. Key areas are the design of gearboxes for large equipment and the development of our own software
The ex-head of the technical department of AVTOVAZ believes that mobilization methods should be introduced into the country’s economy – setting priorities at the state level, securing investments at 2-3% per year, creating national projects to prioritize group of components localize with the participation of OEMs and suppliers. Remember that OEMs are companies that produce components that other manufacturers can sell under other brands, OEM manufacturing is developed in China.
And if national projects appear in Russia to locate a priority group of components with the participation of such OEM companies and suppliers, and the list of import substitution is approved at the government level and meets the national targets, Russian and Chinese companies will can implement , says Sergey Kurdyuk.
