Kanonersky Island in St. Petersburg is an artificial formation that was created during the construction of the Sea Canal. For a long time it was only possible to get there by ferry or private boat, or even on ice in winter.
Therefore, in 1983, an underwater car tunnel was laid on the island.
The name “Kanonersky” island immediately received, but officially this name was adopted only in our days. It is curious that the tunnel was built using the “down section method”: the structures were lowered to the bottom, and then water was pumped out. The mass of each of the five sections is about 8000 tons. The total length of the tunnel is 927 meters.
For the USSR, this was the first experience of building a tunnel in this way. By the way, today the tunnel remains the only way to Kanonersky Island: the viaduct of the Western High-Speed Diameter passed here, but there is no exit.
Mikhail Kolodochkin has been collecting unusual facts from the history of technology for many years. For example, did you know that in Russia there is a road tunnel 900 meters deep?
