Nice to open a jar of pickled cucumbers on New Year’s Eve or drink compote from berries from your own plot all winter, right? And for this the harvest must not only be grown and processed properly, but also transported properly.

What to wear?

The most convenient container for transport apples, pears, plums and other fruits – ordinary boxes, made of wood, plywood or plastic. In it, you can store the crop in the winter, and in the spring you can bring seedlings to the dacha. The convenience is not only that the fruits do not crumple, but also that the boxes can be stacked on top of each other, optimizing the place for transport and storage.

The same applies to carrots and beets. Root vegetables are also best placed in boxes, and in order not to damage them along the way, at least shift them with paper (even better – with long wood shavings, straw or the like).

Potato not so tender, and the classic container for it are bags. The best are textile, breathable. Potatoes don’t get wet in it, even if you forget about them for a few weeks.

In front of berries nothing better than wicker baskets has been invented until now. In extreme cases, you can use cardboard boxes, plastic buckets, but you can not leave berries in them for a long time – they will wrinkle. And they won’t last long. At the bottom of the basket (box, bucket) was something soft. Take currants – put a few currant leaves on the bottom. If the container has a lid, close it only for the journey. And leave an air gap of at least a few centimeters.

greens (lettuce, parsley, etc.) to collect in bunches and carry in small boxes. Where to get these? The supermarkets are full of them.

Important: do not take spoiled fruit “on board”: they themselves cannot withstand the road and they will spoil their “neighbors”.

How to wear?

As Gleb Zheglov said to Ivan Pashuk: “gently”. This is the main rule. Dip carefully – so that nothing crumbles and does not roll over the trunk and interior of the car. It’s soft to wear, won’t jump on bumps and won’t fly into potholes. Smooth acceleration and braking. Carefully unload the transported crop.

However, people, as a rule, take care of what they make with their own hands (and also grown).

Three tips for the road

  1. You can slightly increase the smoothness of the car by slightly “bleeding” the tires, which will reduce the pressure in them. Remember how Remarque in “Three Comrades” when Lokamp, Kester and Lenz sold an old Cadillac? But do not be zealous – the pressure must remain within the limits allowed by the manufacturer. Which one exactly? – this is indicated on the plate in the door opening, on the back of the fuel filler flap or in the user manual.
  2. To transport the crop, it is better to choose a cooler day. Or turn on the air conditioning so that the car is fresh.
  3. Choose the flattest road from the cottage to the house (if possible). All this will help to deliver valuable cargo safely and healthily.

Expert opinion

We transport the crop: the secrets of experienced drivers

— I do not interfere much with the transportation of gifts from gardens and orchards by car! Potatoes, carrots, beets, radishes, courgettes, pumpkins will come anyway. Well in a bag, even in bulk in the trunk. But for more delicate fruit, I have about ten different baskets, both large and small. All berries only in baskets! And I try not to combine several berries in one container, so that I don’t have to deal with bulkheads later at home. Crushing fruits and vegetables, ripe tomatoes and pears – also in baskets!

I try to collect the most tender ones, such as raspberries just before departure.

It is also very important to have modern and therefore suitable for transport variants. You won’t take the same old varieties of sea buckthorn very far, however you think of it. When harvesting the berries, a piece of skin comes off where the stem is attached, and the berry immediately begins to flow and sour. And modern varieties have a dry separation: put it in a basket and even take it to another city!

I never leave what I brought in the car. No matter how tired – drag everything home, disassemble and start processing. In the car and a day in the sun there will already be losses.

Yes, when I go to the dacha, I get around even in the heat with open windows, but when I am with the harvest at the dacha, I turn on the air conditioner at full power!

Knowledge of readers

The topic of crop transport is discussed annually in many locations in Runet. One of the simplest and at the same time most useful and universal advice is to try to process the crop to the maximum at the dacha itself.

If you have electricity and drinking water in your country house, it is not difficult to create conditions for canning. And with gas, the conditions are absolutely royal!

In this case, you should not take raw materials from the dacha, but cans with canned vegetables, jam, compotes … You can use boxes, boxes and shopping bags for their transport. He paved the benches with crumpled newspapers – and go! Only smoothly, slowly … Otherwise, you will have to remove broken glass from the car and dry clean it.

Incidentally, instead of ending up in the sewer/landfill, organic matter remains on your land and serves as fertilizer for future cultivation.
