By 2022, the number of alarms from car owners has now risen by as much as 30%, experts at the security firm Delta Security Systems say.

The company’s analysts analyzed 150,000 alarms received from car owners in 2021 and 2022. The data obtained indicate an increase in illegal actions against cars in the past six months.

Monthly there was an increase in incoming alarm signals compared to the same period last year, from 10 to 30%. The highest number of hijacking attempts and other illegal actions were committed in March and April, this period accounting for 30% of all alarms in 2022. Least of all – in February and July.

The most popular among attackers are:

  • Toyota Camry
  • Toyota RAV4
  • Mazda 6
  • Mazda CX9
  • Mercedes-Benz GLE53 AMG
  • Mercedes Benz S400
  • BMW.

The greatest number of alarms is recorded in both capitals: in St. Petersburg the increase over 6 months was 31%, in Moscow – 25%.

The company’s specialists believe that the number of hijacking attempts has increased due to rising spare parts prices and their shortage. Most are aimed at further “parsing” cars and selling individual spare parts.

Given the nature of the prevented theft attempts, it can be concluded that such a scheme will continue to be applied, especially for car brands that have officially left the Russian market, or for mass brands that have problems with the supply of spare parts.

A new trend is discernible: fraudulent attempts have started to appear in relation to leased cars: attempts to sell cars “for spare parts” and fraud with the insurance of leased cars.
