Custom software is sometimes used for this, which is the simplest and almost invulnerable way in our digital age. To catch scammers by the hand, you need to know this in advance, the customer does not notice the catch himself.
Today, at almost all major gas stations, the refueling process is controlled by computers and any software can be hacked and re-flashed. Unscrupulous managers take advantage of this and invite “IT people” who install software in which electronics are reprogrammed for underfilling.
The malware is controlled from a remote server. It starts to work after the gas station operators on the cash registers at the beginning of the shift choose the required combination of characters and turn off the program after the shift. At the same time, ‘smart’ software itself destroys the traces of its activities.
Note that the consumer will not notice an underfill, which is only 3-7% of the amount paid.
