August 25 became Car Sharing Day, in honor of which the Ministry of Transport of the capital is holding a special promotion with prizes from August 18 to 25 in three Russian cities – Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi, in which users of Yandex Drive, Delimobil, Citydrive and BelkaCar are participating.

Deptrans also decided to make a portrait of a car-sharing driver, for which he conducted a study together with operators.

Usually short-term car rentals are used by men around the age of 34 who work in offices and have children. More than 70% of the respondents have a driving experience of more than 7 years.

Nearly half (41%) have been using Car-Sharing consistently for 3 years or more and 48% of respondents own a car, while the rest of Car-Sharing users have no intention of buying it.

More than half of the respondents (56%), in addition to car sharing, often use the metro, MCC, MCD and overground public transport, build rides with scooters and bicycles.

People are more likely to use carsharing to work, shopping centers and train stations, and the average journey time is 16 km or 36 minutes. And it doesn’t depend on the season: 84% of respondents use carsharing in winter and summer.

Compared to 2000, the number of 18-year-olds who want to buy a car immediately after obtaining a driver’s license has fallen by 30% – they prefer short-term rentals. Moscow supports short-term rental services because an average of 7 people use one car per day, meaning 1 car-sharing car replaces 7 personal cars – reducing road strain, air pollution and parking congestion.

Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Transport:

– This suggests that almost half of users have a new behavioral model – from consumption to a culture of sharing. This is a new model of relationships between residents who make rational use of a common resource for the benefit of the city. It’s great that 49% of users have preschool and school-age children who see their parents’ example and adopt the sharing behavior model from childhood.

The transition to car-sharing from a personal car is changing transport behaviour: time-based payment encourages a more balanced approach to your “demand for movement” and a more economical planning of your trips in the city.

The service has become a good alternative to buying a passenger car. Thanks to car sharing, drivers use no more than 90,000 passenger cars per day, which reduces the load on the roads and improves the ecology of the city.

For users whose car is stationary under the window most of the time, we recommend trying our Steering Wheels – Cars for Friends service. It is a useful platform that allows you to share your car with friends until you need it. The owner can track his car online – where is it, how fast is it going and how much fuel does it have. And he chooses those to whom he can entrust his car. You can register and join the project here.

Since 2018, the city has been providing subsidies to car-sharing operators to pay off some of the lease payments. This year we will continue to support carsharing in Moscow and reimburse part of the amount for the expansion of the car fleet. By order of the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, the amount of such a grant has doubled this year. This allows companies to meet their financial obligations to banks. Operators will be able to keep the number of cars in Moscow at the level of 30 thousand (this is the largest fleet in the world) and jobs – now more than 2000 people work in car-sharing services.

We will continue to support operators so that carsharing remains as accessible and convenient as it has always been. We will continue to develop the service – carsharing will have even more features and possibilities, and residents will have even more choice about how and what to move around Moscow.
