Statistical analysis from Rosgosstrakh suggests that, in general, women tend to have fewer car accidents than men, based on drivers’ comprehensive insurance claims examined before 2022. However, the same study notes that women are less attentive to moving vehicles and pedestrians near roadways. Pedestrian collisions are the only category where women exceed men in insurance claims.
This material presents findings without political or legal commentary and reflects observed patterns in a large sample of drivers and incidents.
In total, less than a third of hull insurance claims were filed by motorists last year. The most common reasons cited for claims were:
- collision involving two or more vehicles (32.5%)
- damage to glass (23.5%)
- contact with an obstacle (18.7%)
- unlawful actions by third parties (9.6%)
- collision with an unknown vehicle (8%)
These figures align with nationwide trends in Russia. The State Traffic Inspectorate reported that, during the first nine months of 2022, women were involved in accidents at a rate well below men — out of 66,500 recorded incidents, 11,900 involved women. It is important to note that there are more male drivers than female drivers overall.
Analysts explain the lower accident rate among women by the high share of mothers who drive. They routinely transport children to clubs and schools, drive with care, and tend to avoid risky behaviors. As a result, the consequences of traffic incidents perpetrated by women are generally less severe on average.
