Toyota is known for its reliability, but this can give some people a false sense of security.

In a video on YouTube channel The Car Care Nut, a Toyota master technician known as AMD showed what can happen to engine cylinders, whose oil is changed at the time set by the manufacturer – 10,000 miles (16,093 km).

This is a 2015 Toyota Camry with 180,000 miles (290,000 kilometers) on the odometer. It belongs to a person who has clearly followed all Toyota requirements for car maintenance.

During a run of about 120,000 miles (193 thousand kilometers), Camry started eating oil. In the beginning, consumption was about a liter per 1000 miles (1,609 km), which was acceptable. However, when the figure of 150,000 miles (241,401 km) appeared on the odometer, 2-3 liters of oil per thousand miles began to waste.

In the end, the owner turned to AMD, who, after dismantling the engine, showed what caused such a large oil consumption. There are signs of wear on the walls of the two cylinders – depressions that can be felt when you run your finger over them. Oil came through them and fell into the cylinders. The reason for this is the stuck oil scraper rings on the pistons, which gave out due to a rare oil change.

To avoid this, AMD recommends changing the oil every 5,000 miles, or 8,000 km, or every six months instead of 12.
