It is believed that the bigger the car, the safer it is in an accident. But among the great machines there are leaders and outsiders. Take, for example, the new series of crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). She showed that most full-size sedans provide passengers with poor side impact protection.
During the tests, a ram weighing 1.9 tons collided with cars traveling at 60 km / h, which perfectly simulates a side impact with an average crossover.
The following models have been tested:
- Subaru Outback (Wagon only)
- Hyundai Sonata
- Volkswagen Jetta
- Honda agreement
- Toyota Camry
- Nissan Altim
- Chevrolet Malibu
As a result, only the Subaru Outback managed to pass the test, which received a “good” rating. Hyundai Sonata and Volkswagen Jetta turned out to be worse – their interior was slightly more deformed, but airbags saved the situation – the overall rating is “satisfactory”.
Passengers on the Honda Accord, on the other hand, are at risk of pelvic and head injuries as a result of an accident. The Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima and Chevrolet Malibu were rated poorly. The risk of injury to the head, neck or trunk with these machines is high. In most cases, the heads of the driver or passenger dummies did not hit the airbag, but the pillars and other hard elements.
The IIHS noted that small and medium crossovers performed better in this test.
