The increase in the number of crimes on the roads in Russia has led to even tougher penalties for hidden license plates on cars. “Facilitating the logistics of obtaining and increasing the use of such devices may lead to a further deterioration of the situation on the roads, make it more difficult to detect criminals and increase the level of impunity. At the same time, the availability of understandable license plates, ensuring safety on the roads, especially in cases of accidents or crimes, and tracking of people who hit pedestrians and/or leaving the scene of the accident,” he said.

In his view, harsher penalties for such violations could serve as a preventive measure. Palyulin added that Russians may demand strict measures against drivers who try to evade responsibility.

October 14 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed Law on deprivation of rights for up to one and a half years due to hidden license plates on vehicles. According to the document, the penalty for driving a vehicle with state license plates equipped with the use of devices that prevent identification or allow them to be changed or hidden will be deprivation of driver’s license for 1 to 1.5 years. Currently, such a violation is subject to a fine of 5 thousand rubles or deprivation of rights for 1-3 months.
