According to Andrey Mukhortikov, the head of the Moscow TsODD department, the flashing yellow does not perform the functions assigned to it. His words are quoted by Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Instead of attracting the attention of motorists, such a signal creates risks. It does not prohibit the passage, therefore, lovers of high speeds do not even try to slow down at intersections. And that often leads to accidents.
Now, at intersections where this signal was used before, they decided to abandon it. However, this does not mean that the traffic lights are turned off completely. On the contrary, the red and green signals continue to operate at night. However, the allotted time for each stage is shortened. That is, the signals will switch faster than during the day.
So far, only traffic lights in the capital have been switched to this mode. The work was carried out in phases. It started back in 2019. Now, according to the TsODD, all traffic lights in Moscow have gone off the flashing yellow.
The effectiveness of this work is confirmed by statistics. At intersections where the new regime has already been introduced, the number of accidents fell by 19% in the first two years. And if we compare the same period with 2018, when the decision to remove the flashing yellow has not yet been made, the number of accidents has decreased by a third.
