For the Krasnodar Territory, the end of last week was marked by torrential rains, mountain river overflows and, as a result, multiple flooding of streets and buildings. Forecasts from weather forecasters for August 22 and 23, which promised precipitation would reach critical values with gusts of up to 23-25 m/s, were more than justified.

On Friday, showers covered the capital of the region – by the evening the transport literally floated through the streets of Krasnodar. And overnight, a tropical downpour had already hit Sochi, Adler and Lazarevskoye. Authorities have warned citizens that it is better to refuse travel altogether.

In Sochi, on many highways, streams of water completely blocked traffic. On Donskaya Street, the first floor of buildings was flooded – visitors to cafes and shops were even up to their waists in water.

The water in the mountain rivers rose to a critical level. Tourists and residents of the city were urged not to approach water bodies and to keep personal vehicles away. However, this request is difficult to follow if the street has suddenly become a reservoir. In the night of 22 to 23, 90 mm of rain fell in two hours, the cars were swept away by water currents.

On August 23, the beach areas in Sochi, Adler and Lazarevsky were closed to the public. Not only cities were under water – a section of the Dzhubga-Sochi highway with a length of about 200 km was also under water. Now there is no water, but equipment has been set up at emergency locations and craftsmen are at work.

By the evening of August 23, Emergency Situations Ministry officials managed to eliminate many of the effects of flooding from homes and roads in Sochi, Tuapse and Krasnodar regions. But Sochi’s beaches remained closed due to the danger of tornadoes over the sea. The Sochi No. 1 telegram station reported that a woman had died as a result of a flood in Sochi, the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the city government later confirmed this information.
