Is it possible to switch to cheaper low-octane petrol by fitting shorter spark plugs and thus lowering the compression ratio?
– No. There are several reasons.
The degree of compression of the engine with such a rework will literally change by a few tenths, but the conditions for the spread of the flame front with “drowned” candles will be much worse compared to the original ones.
In addition, the released threads of the cylinder head will quickly overgrow with soot, and therefore it will not be possible to quickly return to the recommended candles.
In the past, motorists liked to conduct “candle” experiments, choosing the glow number and opening “for themselves.” In addition, in an effort to switch to low-octane gasoline, many used candles with a shortened thread section, lowering the compression ratio by some crumbs. However, modern engines are much more capricious than their ancestors, which is why manufacturers categorically object to any deviations from their recommendations.
In the end there will be no savings, but problems are possible.
So let’s leave the old-fashioned methods where they belong – in the past.
