Question from the forum “Behind the wheel” – we answer them periodically.
How long does a tire really last?
According to GOST 4754-97, “The warranty period for a tire is 5 years from the date of manufacture. The possibility of further operation of the tire is determined by the consumer in accordance with its technical condition. Note: 5 years not from the date of purchase, but from the date of manufacture!
After that, it is worth periodically inspecting the tread and sidewalls. If cracks appear in it, even small ones, the tire must be replaced. Pay particular attention to the residual value of the tread. The minimum tread depth for summer tires is 1.6 mm and for winter tires 4 mm.
The tire life limit is not defined by any document, but many manufacturers speak of ten years from the date of manufacture.
The week and year marking of tire production is located on the sidewall and consists of four numbers. The first two are the week number, the second two are the year.
