Often, drivers can suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning while the engine is running in a poorly ventilated garage. Marina Seryakova, head of the treatment department of the Medsi clinic in Krasnogorsk, talked about this in an interview with socialbites.ca. Even a little time spent in such conditions can have dire consequences, she noted.
“Carbon monoxide causes acute poisoning. When entering the human body through inhalation with exhaust, the substance interacts with hemoglobin in the blood, forming carboxyhemoglobin, a powerful complex that blocks the supply of oxygen to tissues in the human body. “If the concentration of carbon monoxide in the air is 0.1 percent, death can occur within an hour,” the doctor said.
The expert noted that the effect of carbon monoxide on the human body depends on the level of concentration in the air. The nervous system is the first system to react to lack of oxygen. Thus, pulsating headaches, throbbing in the temples, dizziness, nausea unrelated to food, vomiting, and visual disturbances occur.
In case of severe poisoning, the victim develops drowsiness, apathy, constant tinnitus, and headaches become even more intense. Breathing becomes frequent and shallow. The person is conscious but confused.
The expert warned that if the victim is not helped in time, breathing and heartbeat may stop, resulting in death. People exposed to carbon dioxide poisoning may experience complications months or years later. The doctor explained that for this reason, patients may complain of memory loss, decreased concentration and intelligence level.
