Vehicle drivers still resort to risky and sometimes dangerous methods to de-ice their vehicles. Sergei Ponomarev, technical instructor of the international network of car service centers Fit Service, told socialbites.ca.
“For example, sometimes small “country” electric stoves are placed under the car. The logic is this: I will put a heater plate under the oil pan, heat the oil and the engine will start. But the same effect can also occur at high speed: the oil begins to boil, burn and, of course, lose its properties,” said the expert.
The expert noted that some drivers use a hair dryer to heat the intake manifold. The fact is that in modern cars it is not taken into account that they are mostly plastic and easy to melt. Moreover, melting may occur inside, which will disrupt the operation of the system.
One of the favorite remedies in cold weather is boiling water. Some pour it onto the windshield, some pour it into the manifold. It may become deformed due to temperature changes or the cylinder head may become loose. The expert warned that the aluminum manifold may crack.
An electric heat gun is often used to revive a frozen car. Decorative elements, anthers and cables may melt if used incorrectly. Fuel lines can also melt if the weather is too hot. The result is fuel leak and fire.
Open flames such as gas burners are strictly prohibited. The car’s engine contains flammable liquids – fuel, oil. Ponomarev emphasized that they could easily catch fire with the slightest leak.
