The use of methanol-based antifreeze can adversely affect human health and lead to serious diseases. Valentina Pigareva, therapist of the MEDSI Clinic in Krasnogorsk and deputy chief physician for quality control and safety of medical activities, told this to a socialbites.ca correspondent.

As a rule, illegal traders sell such liquids on roadsides directly from cars, but you can also buy it in regular stores.

“Methyl alcohol, which is part of some antifreeze fluids, is a strong poison that can affect the nervous and vascular systems, optic nerves and retina of the eye. “In case of inhalation (inhalation – editor’s note), contact with intact skin, ingestion, irritation of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and eyes, it can cause acute poisoning with fatal consequences,” the doctor said.

Repeated long-term exposure to methanol causes dizziness, pain in the heart and liver, leads to neurasthenia, vegetative-vascular dystonia, blurred vision, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, upper respiratory tract and dermatitis.

There are cases when methanol accidentally entered the human body. 5-10 grams of the substance can cause severe poisoning accompanied by blindness, and 30 grams can cause death. The doctor said that if antifreeze gets inside, the first aid is to call the ambulance team and induce vomiting by pressing the base of the tongue.
