Question from the forum “Behind the wheel” – we answer them from time to time.
– Why don’t car factories install crankcase protection on the conveyor belt?
– Primarily because it costs money – and thus reduces the manufacturer’s revenue.
Another issue is that strong protection can affect the body’s behavior in an accident, sometimes requiring additional crash testing. This is one of the reasons why some models (for example, Volkswagens and Skodas) are equipped with an impact-resistant plastic protection.
Most manufacturers only equip their cars with plastic crankcase protection. It protects against dirt, but not against mechanical stress. Some car giants still install some kind of metal protection. There are also those who do nothing at all.
It is also necessary to monitor the effect of protection on the temperature regime of the power supply.
In addition, the disadvantage of the installation is a slight decrease in ground clearance. But this is the case when such a sacrifice is justified.
Under the plastic cover of the Haval F7 crossover, we measured just 175mm. Place metal protection here and the clearance becomes quite light.
