The authorities of Russia and China agreed to build the bridge in 2013. Its length is more than 2.2 km. From the Russian side, a 4.96 km long approach was also built to it.
During the opening, 8 Russian trucks drove over the bridge towards the Russian-Chinese border. Another 8 trucks drove from China to Russia (in China, this number is considered lucky.
The opening of the bridge is expected to increase the load on customs posts in the region, opening additional checkpoints.
“We are already seeing a shortage of transport capacity in the areas of railways, border crossings, ports, more than 70 million tons per year. And with the current dynamics of growth in trade turnover, freight traffic heading east, it could double,” Izvestia is quoted as saying by Alexei Chekunkov, Minister of Development of the Far East and the Arctic.
Also, several industrial sites, including joint ventures, will be created and developed in the areas near the bridge.
