Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
For one and a half million you can buy a ten-year-old Japanese SUV with a range of 180-190 thousand kilometers. The car is hardy and here you have to pay more attention to the condition and not the mileage.
Under the hood is most likely a 4D56U turbo diesel with a volume of 2.5 liters and an output of 178 hp. The timing belt should be replaced every 90 thousand km, but it is better to shorten this interval to 60-70 thousand km.
In cold weather, you will hear a whistling sound from the fan clutch. Substitution will not help as this is a constructive miscalculation. Sometimes you come across Pajero with a manual gearbox, but most cars have an automatic. The five-speed automatic transmission is reliable, serious problems with careful handling and regular replacement of the working fluid are not to be expected. Although the device sometimes gets stuck in one gear, this is due to flaws in the device’s firmware and not due to malfunctions.
There are cars with a simple four-wheel drive system, where the front axle is hardwired. But it is better to look for Pajero Sport with the Super Select system. In terms of reliability, it is not inferior to the usual “part-time”, and four-wheel drive can be used not only on off-road.
The undercarriage is very durable, even when the car regularly drives on broken roads. For 150 thousand kilometers, it is unlikely that anything will need to be replaced.
The paintwork is thin, easily scratched and peeled. Surface corrosion is possible.
Like its sister L200 pickup, the cab looks simple and is made of inexpensive materials. And it does not differ in wear resistance.
Toyota Land Cruiser 100
Toyota Land Cruiser 100 is not only known for driving comfort and maneuverability, but also for reliability. Even at a very respectable age.
For one and a half million rubles you can find a Cruiser from 2004-2005. Sometimes there are diesel versions with a 1HD engine (4.2 liters, 204 hp). His resource, with proper care, easily gets over 350-400 thousand kilometers. You need to carefully monitor the cooling system (the health of the boost depends on it) and change the timing belt every 80-90 thousand.
Most cars on the market have a powerful V8 engine (4.7 liters, 235 hp). He has no weaknesses and problems usually arise on solid runs – usually over half a million miles. As with a diesel engine, you need to change the timing belt every 80 thousand km and adjust the valves every 40-50 thousand km.
The five-speed automatic transmission is reliable and its power is directly dependent on the driving style. Four-wheel drive is permanent, with a differential in the transfer case. The oil in it should be updated every 40-50 thousand km.
You should carefully check the history of the car. After all, “weaving” has always been (and remains) hugely popular with privateers.
Suspension tenacious – shock absorbers cared for 150-160 thousand km. A similar margin of safety and other elements. In top class cars with automatic height adjustment it is absolutely necessary to check the condition of the level sensors.
The paint is weak – don’t be surprised if the car has been completely repainted. The centers of corrosion appear first of all on the edges of the doors.
The interior is age-resistant by the standards of Japanese cars. The build quality is excellent.
Nissan Pathfinder
For the price of a two year old Patriot they offer the Nissan Pathfinder 2012-2013 (R51). On the one hand, kinship with the Navara pickup means “condoness.” But this had a positive effect on reliability.
The lion’s share of cars with a modernized 2.5 turbo diesel with a power of 190 hp. (YD25). Some childhood sores from the old engine, such as cracks in the head of the block or howling of the turbine when cold, were avoided. However, a new problem has arisen with the turbocharger: traction is lost. This is usually remedied by flashing the control unit. The turbine itself takes care of 250-300 thousand km.
Three-liter V9X diesels (231 hp) are less common. Their weak point is the valve of the EGR system and there are also interruptions in the operation of the high pressure fuel pump due to a malfunction of the fuel pressure control valve.
A manual gearbox was only accompanied by a 2.5 diesel. The device is very reliable. Only the clutch needs to be replaced every 100 thousand km.
The five-speed automatic is also hardy. Here you need to carefully monitor the condition of the heat exchanger. Most machine failures are caused by antifreeze getting into the oil. The chassis must be overhauled every 150-170 thousand km, including wheel bearings.
Scratches and chips appear on very fresh cars and after three or four years the paint swells. Critical places are arches and door edges.
The salon is made of cheap materials. Plastic is easily scratched and the skin is quickly covered with cracks.
And who else of the “framers”?
For example, Chevrolet Trailblazer – it will be even fresher than the “Japanese”. And that’s usually more of a hassle.
Another option is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. But the price does not depend on the year, but on the state. Yes, it costs more to operate.
Land Rover SUVs – Defender and Discovery – look interesting. But they are less reliable and very expensive to repair.
So the best choice is still to frame Japanese SUVs.
- The secret to our grandfathers’ fight against off-road: the best alternative to wheel chains and anti-slip bracelets has not yet been invented!

For 1.5 million rubles, they do not sell new, although still quite fresh (one-year-old) Patriot. You can use it as long as the warranty is valid. Or look for an alternative to the secondary among the all-terrain vehicles with a frame.
