With the departure of foreign car manufacturers from Russia, the customs barrier on the import into the country of fake spare parts in original packaging by car companies has been removed. As a result, the number of counterfeit products has increased exponentially. Ilya Plisov, member of the board of directors of the Automotive Services Union, told socialbites.ca.
“Essential consumables such as filters and pads are rarely counterfeited because many companies produce them and sell them at low prices. “More complex spare parts, which are available only in the form of original products with the car manufacturer’s brand, were also counterfeited before, but now these low-quality fakes are being more actively imported into Russia,” Plisov told socialbites.ca.
In his opinion, the protection of intellectual property by automakers was almost the only way customs could fight against counterfeiting of original parts. Manufacturers would announce in advance the names of distributors and importers, and in some cases minimum part prices, to the customs points to which products under their own brands were sent.
“Today, these mechanisms have been removed, there is no other mechanism in customs. As a result, we are faced with an avalanche of fake spare parts masquerading as genuine. The worst thing is that the fake engine parts are of incredibly low quality,” Plisov concluded.
