Chinese cars are much worse protected from theft than European cars, and hackers can get the code to unlock them simply by knowing the car’s VIN number. Andrey Kondrashov, head of the laboratory “Author’s protection against theft”, told socialbites.ca about this.
“With a Chinese car’s VIN number, you can get the manufacturer’s PIN to access the immobilizer. This is a vulnerability because it is enough to ask the seller for the code, and such codes are also sold on Aliexpress. With VIN, you can get a code for a specific car, ”Kondrashov explained to socialbites.ca.
The expert noted that this problem applies to almost all Chinese cars – Haval, Tank, Geely, Chery and their brands Omoda and Exeed, which are heavily found on the Russian market. It also warned that there are hardware that can extract the immobilizer access code from the vehicle’s electronic components.
“The Chinese are reducing production costs, and despite the large number of beautiful screens in the cabin, normal protection systems are flawed in terms of burglar resistance,” said Kondrashov.
Formerly Andrey Kondrashov said “Newspaper.Ru” about typical methods of stealing cars in the summer.
