Mixing different types of engine oils can lead to engine failure and subsequent costly repairs. Alexey Ruzanov, technical director of the Fit Service international network of automobile services, announced this in an interview with socialbites.ca. According to the expert, mixing different oils is possible only in exceptional cases.
“The main danger when mixing lubricants is a possible chemical reaction between the additives. Synthetic and mineral oil are mixed in extreme cases where there is no other choice. Among the undesirable reactions when mixing the compositions are precipitation and foaming. However, this reaction is not instantaneous. All this leads to a gradual loss of compression and power, and then an expensive engine repair,” said Ruzanov.
According to the expert, different situations are possible when the car owner needs to mix different engine oils. For example, if the level drops during a trip, you urgently need to add oil. It is quite acceptable to add non-native oil and go to the repair place. But at the station you need to do a full oil change, as well as filters.
You will have to change the oil again twice before the deadline. The expert emphasized that only in this case you can remain calm about the physical and chemical properties of the oil poured into your vehicle’s engine.
