Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia will recall 571,000 vehicles for repairs due to fire hazards. Potentially troubled car owners were advised to park them outdoors. informs The Associated Press cites the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall campaign affects the Hyundai Santa Fe crossover produced from 2019 to 2023 and the hybrid version produced from 2021. The recall also includes 2022 and 2023 Santa Cruz pickup trucks and a Santa Fe plug-in hybrid produced in the same years. The review also concerns the Kia Carnival van.

Problems are with the wiring of trailer hitches supplied as factory equipment or fitted by dealers. It turns out that even when the ignition of the car is turned off, water can get into the microcircuit, which is part of the wiring harness, and cause a short circuit. Five cases of thermal damage to cables without a fire and ignition are known.
