A car with an automatic transmission (AT) must be applied to the parking brake when parking on a steep slope. Mikhail Kolodochkin, an expert at Za Rulem magazine, talked about this in an interview with socialbites.ca. According to him, if this is not done, the automatic transmission may be locked.

The “parking” mode is a geared gear connected to the output shaft of the box and a lever mechanism that goes between the gear teeth and prevents its movement. If you put the car on a steep slope without the handbrake, the entire weight of the car will fall on this lever, which can lead to jamming or breakdown of the automatic transmission, ”explained Kolodochkin.

The source added that when parking on a slope, you must first apply the parking brake and only then move the automatic transmission lever to the “park” position and take your foot off the brake pedal.
