It’s simple – this is the Mercedes-Benz E-Active Body Control system – an important safety feature in the S-Class.
Videos of the Mercedes-Benz E-Active Body Control suspension system are going viral thanks to the “Free Driving Assist” mode that allows cars to bounce up. For example, on crossovers, this mode helps not to get stuck in deep ruts and in the sand.
This video was posted on LinkedIn by Mercedes-Benz Head of Corporate Communications Tobias Just. It shows that even the S-Class can bounce.
As far as we know, the S-Class’s E-Active Body Control suspension doesn’t have the same bounce mode as that of the GLE and GLS. However, footage shows the S-Class bouncing up and down, each damper being operated individually.
It seems Mercedes-Benz engineers have been experimenting with the S-Class’s software to add a new feature.
A feature like this doesn’t seem necessary on a crossover, but… E-Active Body Control is used in conjunction with Pre-Safe Impulse Side, which raises the car’s body when safety sensors detect a risk of side impact. This technology helps improve safety by transferring the impact to a more durable part of the structure: the car’s sills.
