Drivers who abuse alcohol at the time of alcohol withdrawal (alcohol withdrawal syndrome) may experience muscle contractions – tremors – rapid, rhythmic movements in the limbs or trunk. This was told to socialbites.ca by a psychiatrist-narcologist Alexander Kovtun. The expert warned that involuntary movements of the legs can cause the car to lose control.
“Such a person has difficulty concentrating, he is absent-minded. If there is alcohol dependence and withdrawal syndrome, there may be tremors in the fingers, legs and whole body. This can cause foot slipping from the brake or accelerator pedal, misuse of controls,” Kovtun socialbites.ca said.
Withdrawal syndrome is the central nervous system’s response to stop drinking alcohol after a long binge, also known in medicine as alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
In this case, the driver cannot concentrate on the traffic situation because his health consumes attention. The doctor emphasized that a deterioration in reaction to road events can be observed in people who drink alcohol, but this depends on individual characteristics.
“Alcohol clearly prolongs the reaction time to danger. But when a person is sober, it is impossible to say unequivocally that the reaction worsens. The body reacts individually, both to the dose and nature of alcohol, and to its cancellation. Someone increases reaction time, but someone does not,” Kovtun concluded.
