Land Rover Freelander II (2007-2014) is considered compact, but it is actually larger than Qashqai and Sportage.
It was created during the period when Jaguar Land Rover was managed by Ford, resulting in a common platform across many Ford and Volvo models. And although the owner soon changed, during the second restyling the new engine turned out to be Ford again.

The most reliable and unpretentious is the Volvo Aspired R6 3.2 (233 hp). Accepts AI-92, resource more than 350 thousand km. There are sores – for example, accelerated wear of gears and bearings of the timing drive. But the chain itself is extremely tenacious. Big and suddenly nothing breaks.
There are few cars with this engine – about a tenth of sales. The vast majority are equipped with a 2.2 diesel in three power versions. Less forced (150, 160 hp) – more resourceful than 190 strong. Joint development of Ford and Peugeot (indices Q4BA, DW12M). Abundantly used in commercial vehicles, its resource goes beyond 400 thousand km. All diesel features are present: economical fuel equipment, EGR valve, particulate filter. Heat exchangers often leak, swirl flaps fall off. However, there are cases that without hesitation left 250 thousand km. Webasto heating is standard equipment.
In 2012, the naturally aspirated was replaced by a supercharged 2.0 (240 hp) from the EcoBoost family. Direct injection, gasoline not lower than AI-95. Bad quality causes serious explosion. The phase regulators are unreliable, the rear crankshaft oil seal is leaking, the exhaust manifold is cracking. The resource is estimated at 220 thousand km.
Transfer
The six-speed manual M66 is only combined with a diesel engine. Durable and hardy.
In all other versions – a six-speed automatic AF21, also known as Aisin TF‑81SC. They are classified as unkillable, albeit with caveats. So, it is desirable to reduce the oil change interval to 50-60 thousand km. Otherwise, the dust from the torque converter clutches will quickly destroy everything else. And clog the heat exchanger. The unit is prone to overheating, the recommended improvement is the installation of an external radiator. Another weak point is the oil pump bushing. Usually the box can withstand 200,000 km without intervention, the total resource goes beyond 350,000.
All-wheel drive is implemented using a Haldex clutch (since 2008 – the fourth generation). All systems with proper maintenance are reliable and have a long service life. Freelander cannot be considered a full-fledged SUV: the clutch has a limit, the body is not a frame, the suspension is independent, spring.
Operational ulcers
- The suspension does not require attention until 120-150 thousand km. What can not be said about the steering: rods and ends often give up to 50 thousand km, the column has a chronic creak.
- Electricity and electronics get on your nerves. Glitches are plentiful and varied: the “brains” of the clutch, media system, camera, door locks, and so on will fail. Sometimes restarting the engine is enough, sometimes not.
- Early cars suffer from rapid battery drain. There are several reasons, and even in summer, with weekly downtime, the battery can fail.
