The situation with road repair has recently been discussed in the State Duma Committee on Transport. Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev reported that in 2022, 26.8 thousand km (+6% year-on-year) of federal and regional roads were repaired and another 1.6 thousand km (+15%) were built.

It seems that the numbers are encouraging, but not everything is so simple. Auditor of the Chamber of Accounts Valery Bogomolov, who was also present at the meeting, noted that where the roads are in excellent condition, the death rate increases.

It is not the first time that the death rate has risen after repairs. In October 2022, the head of the traffic police, Mikhail Chernikov, noted that the smoother the road, the greater the severity of the consequences. And he insisted on legally drawing up a list of mandatory work that should take place along with the replacement of the coating. This is especially true for roads with a high traffic volume – there it is necessary not only to change the asphalt, but also to install at least barrier fences.
