The third-generation Hyundai Tucson crossover has been assembled in Kaliningrad since 2016. He lived in parallel with the fourth generation Kia Sportage, sales of which began a little later. They share a common chassis and all major components and assemblies.
Restyling (2018), in addition to updating the exterior and interior, brought several new units: a 2.4 petrol engine, a 1.6 diesel engine, a robot, an 8-speed hydraulic automatic transmission.
Manual – only 6% of cars on the secondary. Two-thirds is four-wheel drive.
Hyundai Tucson III
Advantages
- The main thing is the absence of major flaws.
- A sea of combinations motor-box-drive type.
The trunk looks correct, but according to the dimensions “Behind the wheel” it has only 364 liters “under the shelf”, which may not be the case in some trim levels.
Defects
- Soft paintwork is sensitive to chips and scratches, chrome quickly becomes cloudy.
- The true 165mm clearance is not all-terrain.
engines
About 70% of cars – with an engine G4NA 2.0 (150 HP). His reputation has been tarnished by massive incidents of bullying. Initially, they sinned only on ceramic dust that was sucked into the cylinders from the inverter. But engines also suffer from lack of oil – when driving without warming up and with insufficient lubrication. This version is confirmed by the fact that 9 out of 10 motors have no score, although everyone has converters. However, neutralizers have a really unpredictable resource. It is possible that the “floating” fuel quality is to blame for this, and AI‑92 is allowed for the G4NA.
Be that as it may, additional oil nozzles were introduced in 2017. But even without them, many engines have successfully passed more than 300 thousand km. Similar character in parent 2.4 (184 HP) – if you follow all the regulations and pour AI-95, nothing terrible will happen.
Diesel 2.0 (185 HP) extremely sensitive to fuel and oil quality, requires perfect care. One bad filling can ruin a lot. But he is also considered prosperous and reliable – a resource of about 400 thousand km.
Controversial options – diesel 1.6 (index D4FD, 136 hp) And petrol turbo engine 1.6 (G4FJ, 177 hp), which has a weak distribution chain. Both are extremely erratic, eating oil from low runs and paired only with a robotic box.
Transfer
The 7DCT robot with two clutches is nervous: jerks and jerks after 50 thousand km, dead clutches, sometimes a flywheel with two masses. The factory replaced the clutch under warranty and updated the firmware of the control electronics. Perhaps it can withstand 250 thousand km, but at what cost?
In any case, for the rest of the gearboxes, there are questions: both manual gearboxes and all types of automatic machines usually require attention no earlier than 150 thousand km. The MCP has a third gear synchronizer that is at risk.
The new eight-speed automatic (A8LF2) is not bad, but it does not tolerate slipping – it strives to go into emergency mode.
The four-wheel-drive clutch and gearbox splines are also delicate and not suited for mud attempts.
Operational ulcers
- Wheel bearings, balls and shock absorbers are rather weak, sometimes replaced under warranty. Only with a very careful drive, all elements can withstand 80-100 thousand km. For the wheelhouse, this is also the limit – more often the repair matures at 50-60 thousand.
- The inverter is often rented in the region of 40-60 thousand km. Many owners do not replace it with a new one (the original is terrifyingly expensive; “universal” ones die even faster), but simply remove it by inserting a flame arrestor tube. The decision is reasonable, but such a change is generally prohibited.
- In early cars, the brake pads wore out quickly, and the discs deteriorated – up to 10-20 thousand km. The problem was later ironed out. The rear calipers are sensitive to acidification and must be cleaned and lubricated.

The Hyundai Tucson III has very successful engine-gearbox-drive combinations. But the suspension, the robot and the notorious neutralizer managed to spoil the reputation of a good car.
Called crossover without fatal problems. But there is something to complain about
