Modern technologies alone, from electric vehicles to digitalisation, are not enough to make the world cleaner and achieve climate-neutral mobility by 20245.

We need a new mobility culture – this is the conclusion of the German Academy of Science and Technology, which presents the report “Integrated planning for urban development and mobility”.

It is necessary to change the behavior and habits of everyday life. People need to learn to think differently and act differently when it comes to mobility.

It’s not just about how you get around – by bike or by car. It’s important to reflect on where we live, where we work, what we do and how we get to work.

For example, the place of residence determines the starting and ending points of journeys, influences the choice of means of transport and is just as important for individual mobility behavior as other personal activities and daily routines.

According to experts, the long-term goal should be – where possible – to avoid long-term traffic as much as possible or to reduce space efforts, to switch to other modes of transport or to improve their technicality. Mobility should be controlled and influenced by economic incentives, clear rules and certain prohibitions, say urban planners.
