Many owners of cars with a manual transmission note how much more difficult it is to shift to first gear in the cold. So heat the box or not? And if you heat it, how?

In the case of mechanics, no additional efforts are required: it is enough to start the engine, the expert notes “Behind the wheel” Alexey Revin.

In a manual transmission, most of the parts rotate, spreading the oil even when the car is parked. Unless, of course, the clutch pedal is depressed.

The same thing happens in a robot gearbox. Cold work is not as dangerous for mechanics as it is for an automatic machine. To overcome difficult shifting, it is enough to stand with the engine running for 5-10 minutes so that the oil warms up a little.

With a classic machine, everything is much more complicated. The thickened fluid cannot create the necessary pressure to compress the clutch packs, and they begin to slip, and the torque converter also suffers. So it is advisable to warm up the machine before going out in winter.

In addition, the automatic transmission does not warm up at all when parked with the engine running, the main warm-up occurs while driving. So it is better to overcome the first kilometers of the road “slowly and sadly”.

The machine warms up faster in position D or R. This was shown during the experiment “Behind the wheel”.
