Touch screens are increasingly replacing buttons and switches in cars, at the expense of safety. There are already many cars with no or almost no extra buttons on the dashboard.

Research shows that fewer mistakes are made with “button” feedback. They are more intuitive and faster to use.

After all, operating a touchscreen while driving is not as easy as operating a button. You won’t know if you’re in the right menu or called the right function until you look at the screen. Buttons make it easy to know if you’ve activated the desired function without even looking at it.

The British Road Safety Institute TRL recently showed the result of a study: the use of a touchscreen in a car increases reaction time by 57%.

A mobile phone offers a 46% longer response time than a push-button phone, making mobile phone use less dangerous than touch screens.

According to a survey conducted in Germany, 37% of drivers said they preferred buttons, levers and sliders; 22% think a combination of different controls works best, 16% prefer a touchscreen and only 10% want to control their car’s functions primarily by voice. The main disadvantage of sensors, car owners consider errors when using such systems.
