We’ve already looked for similarities between the Volvo XC40 and the Geely Coolray crossover. It turned out that there is a lot in common and some parts are interchangeable. But more different.
Now we decided to study the Geely Tugella coupe crossover against the background of Volvo. The official version says they are built on a common Chinese-Swedish SMA platform.
Is this true and what benefits can owners derive from kinship?
We study marking
Tugella has a two-liter 4G20TDB turbo engine with an output of 238 hp. Of.
Volvo is powered by the B4204T engine, which comes in two power options: 190 and 249 hp. Of. Also two liters and supercharged. And just now we have listed all the differences between these engines.
As soon as we removed the crankcase protection and trim covers on top, everything fell into place – this is the same unit. The difference comes down to markers and different software. Even the expansion tank is the same, only the antifreeze has a different color.
Due to the interest, we tried to read Geely with its own diagnostic program for Volvo. She sees the car, but further actions are impossible – the “incomprehensible” VIN intervenes.
If you remove the trim covers, it’s easy to get confused as to whose engine compartment you’re looking at. The Chinese only issue antifreeze of a different color and their own battery.
We unscrew the ignition coils and candles – the Chinese Geely has Lynk & Co decals all over, while the XC40 has the usual Denso and NGK. But in fact there is no difference. We checked the parameters of the “Chinese” candles: they completely coincide with those on the Swedish engine.
Same story with consumables – the air and oil filters are the same as the XC40. This is great news for Volvo owners – and not just those with an XC40. This two-liter engine can be found on the entire line of the company. Chinese consumables are three to four times cheaper than those in Volvo packaging and visually we have not noticed any difference in quality.
Despite the different markings, the engine of the crossovers is the same. The differences come down to nameplates and software.
The oil filter housing is located at the bottom. Geely has Lynk & Co on it instead of Volvo.
A similar story with an automatic transmission – Tugella, like the XC40, has an eight-speed Aisin TG‑81SC hydromechanics. Here somehow no one will be able to save money, because there are no alternative Chinese liquids for the machine (guaranteed quality).
ATF AW‑1 transmission fluid costs 3,500–4,000 rubles per liter. To maintain the long life of the tank, we recommend replacing it every 60,000 km, which requires eight liters of “transmission”.
Platform
There are no differences in the transmission either. The BorgWarner (Haldex) coupler, traditional to Volvo, is also located in Geely. Out of curiosity, we pulled a brand new BorgWarner clutch pump from stock and compared it to the Chinese one, which has no designations. Like twins!
Fluid for the fifth Haldex is not scarce and is produced by many, including jerry cans with the Volkswagen and Volvo logos. Replacement should be carried out every 60-70 thousand km, and preferably more often. One liter is enough (the price is from 3 to 7 thousand rubles).
If you don’t know which car is hanging on the elevator, then you don’t understand it either. Front levers, sway bars and shock absorbers – we found no differences between Geely and Volvo.
In the suspension – not just intersections, but a complete coincidence. Not just one CMA platform, but a complete unification! Levers, silentblocks, anti-roll bars, shock absorbers and subframes – if there’s a shortage of parts on the XC40, we know which dealer to turn to.
The two crossovers also have brakes in common – except that the calipers on Tugella are painted red. And instead of Volvo engraving, the same Lynk & Co.
Original Geely brake pads cost 12 thousand rubles against 16 thousand for the original Volvo. At the same time, Geely pads are more perfect! Here, too, they have saved on brackets – instead, the inner pad is attached to the piston with a special adhesive base. But the Chinese have an additional creaking bracket, which serves as an indicator of wear.
A single CMA platform also ensured full interchangeability of the multi-link rear suspension, down to every nut.
China will help!
In terms of hardware, Geely Tugella and XC40 are like brothers. Volvo owners can really save on many details without sacrificing quality (if you use genuine Geely spare parts, not counterfeit ones).
And when we talk about the engine and gearbox, Tugella here is completely related to the entire current Volvo line. So, the expansion of the Geely model range in the Russian market should also please the owners of Swedish cars.
WHAT TO CHOOSE?
The new Geely Tugella now costs about four million rubles. If the soul is in the Volvo XC40, then for this money it is almost new. Four million is a one-year-old copy with a mileage of less than 20 thousand km. There are cars with the same two-liter gasoline or diesel engine, with which there are also many intersections in terms of the unification of consumables.
But you can also buy models of the older SPA platform. The medium-sized XC60 for four million will be two to three years old with a range of 20-30 thousand km. Most often they come across “sixties” with the same gasoline engine, but in the T5 configuration (250 hp), as well as diesel versions.
XC90, of course, will be older – 2018-2019 with a range of 60-70 thousand km. And most often the 90th comes across the same units – the T5 turbo four with a capacity of 250 horsepower. Of. or 235 hp diesel.
