The Toyota Research Institute showed an electric prototype of the GRIP (Global Research Innovation Platform) as part of its TRI Expo 2023 exhibition. It has no connections between controls and actuators (steering, brakes, and so on), that is, it is controlled entirely by wire.

The machine is driven by electric motors, or rather motor wheels. In addition, the chassis is fully steerable, i.e. each wheel can be steered individually.

The design offers many possibilities: for example, the prototype can turn the front and rear wheels in different directions and reduce the turning circle or in the same direction to allow “crab mode”, i.e. driving diagonally. GRIP is designed to explore the possibilities of interaction between the driver and the car.

In addition, the institute is involved in machine learning, AI, robotics and the creation of new materials.
